BURLINGTON, Wis., Feb. 19 (UPI)
-- A Nestle spokeswoman said salmonella was found in a batch of chocolate morsels manufactured at a plant in Burlington, Wis.
Laurie MacDonald said a sample of the morsels tested positive for salmonella a couple weeks ago. She said a recall was not necessary since the tested batch was never distributed for sale, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said Thursday.
MacDonald assured the public the plant underwent an intense cleaning after the positive test to prevent the possibility of a salmonella outbreak.
"We have rigorous quality assurance protocols and procedures in place, which include testing of product during our manufacturing process," she said.
"As part of our extensive quality procedures, we also tested product manufactured before and after this single positive sample, and all product tested negative. Quality is our number one priority and this is example of our extensive procedures at work."

Orval Kent announced today that it is voluntarily recalling multiple dips as a precautionary measure because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The Orval Kent dips are being recalled because they contain HVP (hydrolyzed vegetable protein) manufactured, distributed and recalled by Basic Food Flavors, Inc., Las Vegas, NV.
Consumers who have recently purchased the items listed below should not consume this product and should return it the store of purchase for a full refund or replacement.
Salmonella is a common food borne pathogen that can cause severe illnesses, including fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. While most individuals recover in three to five days without medical intervention, the infection can be life-threatening to young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Coca-Cola faces mercury poisoning cases in China

Coca-Cola brand Sprite has been caught up in a Chinese investigation into two cases of alleged mercury poisoning.
In two separate incidents Chinese media reported that two people appear to have suffered mercury poisoning after drinking cans of Sprite.
Coca-Cola is assisting Chinese police with its investigation into the poisoning cases that both took place in Beijing – the first one in November last year and the second just two weeks ago.
Likely cause
In a statement, Coca-Cola has ruled out the possibility that mercury contamination could have occurred at its Beijing plant. The soft drinks giant said the Sprite drinks may have been maliciously contaminated after the canning process.
“In these isolated incidents, it could be said that our products have been deliberately contaminated during its circulation channels,” said Coca-Cola in a statement quoted in China Daily.
Chinese media reports into the poisoning cases give an indication of the severity of the contamination.
Poisoning cases
In the first reported case back in November a man is alleged to have vomited several beads of mercury after drinking Sprite purchased in a restaurant in Beijing. In the second case on January 17, parents of a 13-year-old boy took their son to hospital claiming that he had fallen ill after drinking a can of Sprite bought at a Beijing supermarket.
China Daily quoted the father of the boy saying that he had had checked inside the Sprite can and found something the size of a soybean that looked like mercury.
Coca-Cola has tested samples from its production at the time of the poisoning incidents and found no evidence of mercury. But the company has agreed to independent testing and has promised to cooperate fully with the Chinese police investigation to determine the cause of the contamination as promptly as possible.
China has become and important and fast growing market for Coca-Cola. Only last October the company opened a RMB 600m ($88m) bottling plant in the central industrial hub of Wuhan.

O número de pessoas intoxicadas na cidade de Irkutsk, na Sibéria (Rússia), por terem bebido água benta subiu este fim-de-semana para 360, informou hoje o Serviço Federal de Protecção ao Consumidor da Rússia. «Até ao momento já foram registados 360 casos. Mas graças ao tratamento, todos os intoxicados apresentam uma nítida melhoria e estão a receber alta. Hoje 142 pessoas receberam alta», diz um comunicado da entidade, citado pela agência RIA Novosti. A maioria dos afectados apresenta sintomas de infecções gastrointestinais, como diarreia, vómitos, dores de cabeça e febre elevada, típicos de uma gastroenterite rotaviral. A investigação epidemiológica determinou que a intoxicação ocorreu a 19 de Janeiro passado durante as celebrações da festividade religiosa da Epifania. Segundo a tradição ortodoxa, a água recolhida nos rios e lagos durante essa festividade, quando se celebra o baptismo de Jesus Cristo por João Batista no Rio Jordão, apresenta determinadas propriedades curativas e fortificantes. O Serviço Federal de Proteção ao Consumidor afirmou que a água corrente da igreja local corresponde a todas as normas higiénicas. No entanto, a água do lago local, onde alguns crentes ortodoxos recolheram água para beber após ser benzida pelo padre da sua igreja, estava parada e poluída, explicou o departamento sanitário de Irkutsk ao saber do caso de intoxicação em massa.
